Mike’s Approach .

Athletes are characterized by their taking part in competition, striving for achievement, and training for their sport. When an athlete performs we watch their physical performance but what we don’t see is their mental performance. Where was their attention during the big moment? What did their inner voice say before the final play? When did they set their vision for achievement? If it doesn’t work out, will they still feel capable? If sports are taken away, how will they adjust without this big piece of their identity? Mental performance is an important part of what defines an athlete.

I specialize in working with athletes on mental performance issues. My philosophy focuses on empathy, working together to find a solution, and building skills to resolve future issues. Athletes who work with me are often seeking to raise awareness of their mental performance and searching for advice on how to train for improved mental performance.

Before I attempt to correct a problem, I always begin by trying to understand the athlete’s situation from their perspective. It’s important to determine what the problem means to the person and how they’ve tried to correct it so far. Establishing trust and respect at the beginning of working together allows me to better support an athlete in the long run.
